Episode 074 – All About Carbohydrates

Did you know that not all carbs are created equal? True story!

That being said, it’s also true that all carbohydrates, regardless of their origin, end up being broken down into their simplest form so that your body can use them for producing energy. While this is a relatively complex process that we won’t dive into here, we are going to discuss carbs in some detail…We will get into the different categories of carbs, the different types of foods you find within those categories and ultimately how you can make better decisions around carbohydrates and understand their impact on your body.

Episode 074 – All About Carbohydrates

  • What are carbs?
  • 3 basic types of carbohydrates
    • Simple – Candy, unnatural fruit juices, etc..
    • Complex – Fruits, Veggies
    • Processed – Bread, grain, pasta, etc.

      • Monosaccharides – e.g. (glucose) and fruit sugar (fructose)
      • Disaccharides – e.g. table sugar (sucrose) and milk sugar (lactose)
        These first two make up the Simple type of carbohydrate detailed above.
      • Oligosaccharides  – fruits and veggies.
      • Polysaccharides – starches – potatoes, rice.
        The last two make up the Complex carbohydrates.
  • How carbs are used by the body
  • Daily Needs
    • Factor of body weight
      • 2 grams/lb of body lean weight (150 lb = 300 grams of carbs)
    • Macros
      • 40/40/20
  • Carb timing important? 
  • Fiber
    • Recommendations
      • 30-35 grams/day for women
      • 45-50 grams/day for men
